Now I Know Summer is Here

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

An old friend popped in today…doesn’t show up often, about every other year or so.  But oh, so worth the wait.

Rhyncolaelia Digbyana

Formerly known as a Brassavola Digbyana.  It is one of the “foundation” cattleyas.  Any of the “corsage” orchids that you see with a ruffly lip, or a bright green color, has this plant in its background.    It’s a native to Latin America, mainly eastern Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica.

I’ve had this plant for twenty years or so.  I bought it as a small division at a plant fair.  It took six years to bloom the first time.  It blooms more now, but not very often.  Mom just happened to see it today, which was a good thing, as it only remains in bloom for a few short days.  It has a lovely aroma to go with that citrus-y color, it kind of smells like it looks, clean and crisp and green.  We are enjoying its short visit.

Town Hall Meeting Today

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

LTC Allen West was fabulous!  He spoke for almost two hours, and not an “uh, uh, uh” was to be heard.  He handled the hecklers with grace and humor (there were all of about 8 Move.On idjits in the crowd, who of course, wouldn’t sit down and shut up.  One moonbat was removed by BSO).  The hecklers had a bad day, all in all, between the rest of the crowd answering their stupid questions (“Where’s the jobs?”  “Try the want ads, in the newspaper, stupid!”), or Allen deftly handling the moonbattery.

Congressman Allen West

It’s great to know we have a representative who not only gets it, but who is sticking to his promises.

The lefties seem to be fixated on class warfare (TAX THE RICH!!!), and of course, abortion.  They don’t understand that Medicare will totally run out of money by 2023, if nothing is done.  I’m hopeful that men like Allen West and Paul Ryan will be able to force some fiscal responsibility on the Obama Administration.  We shall see.

New Toy ~ Joy!

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

I’ve come up with a great new strategy…send the Iguana Man to Beds, Bath & Beyond to pick me up a little something, chip clips, apple corer, like that.  He inevitably finds something very cool.  The latest being this little beauty, aptly named Pure Indulgence.    And it is.

So far, I’ve made a batch of vanilla and double chocoholic ice cream.  But it is so very simple that I have a thousand other ideas.  Highly recommend.   I hadn’t had homemade ice cream since I was a kid, and it is sooooo much better than store bought.  I can think of nothing better for a hot summer day.  We have some vanilla beans on the way, inasmuch as Publix wanted $8 for one bean!!!   What on earth did we do before the intertubes?  Oh, and the best buy for the machine itself is at Costco (edit, h/t to my pal Mary, who thinks my thoughts before I do).

Okay, must run, I have baby backs on the grill, it’s about time to start adding the hickory chips.

Bon Appetit!
