I Love My KitchenAid Mixer

Monday, April 16th, 2012

The Iguana Man (over) indulged me for my birthday this year with a fabulous KitchenAid Stand Mixer, and the (3) Roller Pasta Set.  My friend the Island Girl has a Grinder Attachment, so we decided to give it a whirl with the leftover pork butt from our great Hawaiian adventure….and made some delicious breakfast sausage.

Delicious Home Made Breakfast Sausage

Those (Alton Brown’s Breakfast Sausage Recipe) are ready for the freezer.  I’ll add some links/recipes/photos later, of the stuff I’ve made thus far with this spectacular machine.

[Edit:  Here are photos and commentary on the sausage making process.  Contrary to the old saying, you really do want to know how sausage is made.  It’s really easy, and well worth the time and savings.  Plus it is tres delicioso!]

A Surprise Birthday Gift

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

It made me cry…..from my sister of another mother.

BLC Krull's Lemonade

Tuesday afternoon, the monster box arrived, Iguana Man bought me a KitchenAid, a machine I’d been lusting after in my heart for years.

And then, another box arrived….smaller, and much lighter.  I opened it, and there was a huge, newspaper wrapped thing inside.  As I peeled the onion like layers away, I found yet more layers of shredded newspaper.

And then I found a beautiful cattleya seedling.  Not sure what to make of this, I looked around….and found a gift card on the floor.  Which totally blew me away…..from Reba.  My mini-me, who never fails to crack me up.  Or shock me!!!

Here is how it will look when it blooms….which I would guess will be by the end of the year.  It is a beautifully grown plant, healthy, and now happy in its new home.  Pretty spectacular, don’t you think?

Thanks, Reba….you got me!

Isn’t that the coolest cake ever?  My BFF the Island Girl knows me too well, chocolate/chocolate with a Gator On Top!

To Salt, or Not to Salt?

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

There are two schools of thought about seasoning meat before grilling.  Do it, or don’t do it.  I’ve fallen under the evil influence of Anne Burrell & Bobby Flay, who both salt their meat heavily.  The theory being, a good dose of kosher salt brings the moisture to the surface of the meat, where it creates a beautiful sear over high heat, and locks in the juicy deliciousness.  Plus, it tastes great!

Four Pounds of Perfectly Seasoned & Grilled Rib Eye

We proved the theory again last night.  Since Island Girl & I hadn’t come up with something new and unique to cook this week, we decided to fall back on the old favorite, a “Steak House Classic” meal.  Rib Eye Steak, Compound Butter, Creamed Spinach, Sauted Mushrooms, Mixed Green Salad, Caprese Salad (okay, not classic, but it uses more tomatoes!), and Baked Potatoes with the usual “stuff”.

Recipes/methods, and more photos, here.
